Maximizing Your Social Security Benefits

Maximizing Your Social Security Benefits

| May 01, 2024

Social Security is complex. There’s a lot to understand and determining how it best fits within your retirement planning can be complex.

One of the most important things you need to know about Social Security is your Full Retirement Age (FRA), which is the age you need to be to receive full, unreduced benefits for life. Social Security has preset the FRA for everyone based on the year you were born (see table).

Once you know your own FRA, you can start planning appropriately. For instance: If you wait to take Social Security after your FRA, the government will give you an 8% raise each year you delay. That’s more than most employees get for a yearly raise, even with a good performance review!
